how, house, how?

How do I make my living space cooler+more welcoming? Slower+less frantic? Pretty+functional? Greener? More open? More cozy? More smell-good-y?

Cus my apartment, right now, feels like the place where Ikea furniture goes to die+unfinished DIY projects remain just that+I feel hectic+like there's always something to do when I walk in the door...

We moved into our new place in April. It's a 2 bedroom with a full office, gas range, large family room, dainty bathroom, there's plenty of storage+I have an awesome backyard. With the exception of not having my own lamb farm in the backyard, this is my dream rental situation. Srsly. As a Bay Area renter, you'd be jealous...

But. How do I feel better about it?

I spend a lot of time on design websites. apartment therapy + re-nest are like crack to me. I SEE what I want, but I get daunted by not knowing what to do first+what I actually want.

Part of it is ME. I'm all over the place in my head ALL of the time. I can't even clean one room at a time. I flit about the house for a solid 30-45-60 minutes cleaning things here+there until I end up in a corner, on my hands+knees, cleaning it thoroughly with a rag, while the rest of the house has bits of clean spots+huge messes in other parts. I don't know how to explain it, really. It sounds crazy now that I'm typing it out. But it's how my mind works+it's a mental block that I come up against when I try to even think of making my apartment a home...

Part of it is now knowing what I want to do with the place on a big-picture scale. Shabby chic? Earthy? Gaudy-yet-classy? What do I want to do?

Part of it is being broke. That needs no explaining.

What I think that I need to do is just go at it. Write it all out+do it. Blog it+photograph it. Research+do. Buy secondhand+fix. Buy new, even, but buy new so that it'll last (NO MORE IKEA! If I can help it...)

I KNOW what I need to do+it's as simple as making our apartment our home.

So. What I'd like to know is: Do you have any suggestions? How did you make your place less like a dorm room+more like a home? How do you transform a place slowly+live in it still? Cus I'm poor+this isn't happening overnight? Help me.
