Kate Winslet does tortured lover really, really well. Masochistic+brilliant. Wants love, but doesn't need it. Needs love, but doesn't want it. But, like, she still takes it+uses it even if it effs her up. I can dig it.

 

up in the air. also sharks!

Saw Up in the Air with the best friend yesterday. I loved it cus:

• It's beautifully shot. I could have watched the movie on mute+been satisfied.
• Great dialogue. I didn't know there was a book until I got home+started overprocessing my movie watching experience via looking up as much of it as I could <3.
• The music!
• George Clooney. Duh.
• Our protagonist is a loner who has to be falsely compassionate for his job. Despite being prodded by the few folks who are close to him about the comfort that he find in his habits+solitude, he maintanes a semblance of being ok for their tentative comfort. He balances. Admirable.
• Lots of potent quotables. My favorite:

"Make no mistake: your relationships are the heaviest components in your life. All those negotiations and arguments and secrets, the compromises. The slower we move the faster we die. Make no mistake: moving is living. Some animals were meant to carry each other to live symbiotically over a lifetime. Star crossed lovers, monogamous swans. We are not swans. We are sharks."
